The Story of Hogwarts: Old School
« on: Nov 17, 09, 05:33:41 PM »
Since the great wizarding war of 1997, life has gone back to normal for most wizard families. Just as when Harry first attended Hogwarts, people are beginning to forget the atrocities of Voldemort's two reigns of terror, filing it to the back of their minds where denial keeps the memories from tearing their hearts again.

Some things have changed in the wizarding world, though. There has been a rise in anger against pureblood wizards, and in the UK, a distrust of anyone formerly of Slytherin house at Hogwarts. The Minister of Magic,  Victoria Leesburg, is a full Muggle-born, and immensely respected with much of the wizarding community. Her weekly radio address "Wand Wish" is popular across the globe. She is a strong proponent of modernizing the wizard community and eliminating some of the barriers and caste systems that UK wizards have constructed.

Other things are changing as well.  Rules about the use of enchanted machinery and Muggle artifacts have loosened, although there is much debate over this issue. Wizards are starting to question their own rules about  enchanted items, such as clocks and radios, and why that couldn't apply to other kinds of Muggle technology that is useful to wizards and not just a way to tease unsuspecting Muggles.

Hermione Granger herself is promoting SPEW, and a number of wizards have freed their house elves in response, making them paid household servants or letting them find other employment. However, the house elf community is perhaps more angry about this movement than even many wizards, and have begun calling themselves "The Faithful".

Overall, the wizard world is beginning to question what it means to be a wizard, and the idea of modernization is enticing to many. Perhaps the wizard world as we know it is going to radically change, or will it retain its traditional ways?
